Sooooo, I can’t stand for people to be annoyed by their homes at this weird time, so I have been giving away a few complementary 1 hour remote consults (also called Virtual Consults) to 

1. help the humans of the world feel more settled in their homes, for their stress level and their health

2. help explain what the heck remote design is like 

3. show you a BUNCH of wonderful product and resources to support our vendors, who I will be listing in coming posts. 

Remote design is not new to me at all, and the practices around it are already in place at many of your other favorite interior design firms. If you follow me you may remember my many remote projects, like an (actual) farmhouse in Maine, a beautiful farm in Snohomish, WA and the occasional refresh and some incredible Studio Ggem projects where I ONLY perform Design Development and clients took it from there. 

The reason remote design is such a natural offering for many designers is that we are already in the flow of designing spaces without the space even existing.  Designers routinely design rooms that are only on paper, and therefore the creative work remains the same. 

The practices around procurement, sourcing and installation oversight is different, so make sure you’re comfortable with what’s offered there, but from a creative perspective it’s all the same. 

What I’m doing are consults, but full eDesign is available.

Amazing elements I think are great 

• -clawfoot tub
• -beadboard wainscot
• -wall mount tub faucet
• -vintage look floor with fabulous border
• -step in shower
• -cute detail of the black toilet seat
• -unfitted look with the dresser and lamp in there. Very cozy and Devol Kitchens like
• -fabulous flagstick window casings and crown- high ceiling

 Her main questions was: 

should she add some wallpaper?

and she’s already a very good stylist with an excellent eye so I showed here some lighting, color combos and accessories but she definitely has that totally dialed in.

Why I love it: 

It’s a classic looking pattern that evokes early American for me, and her home is a 1930′s cottage. I also think it blends with a color scheme she has in the overall home (she takes us on a tour at the top of the video) and looks correct with beadboard and flat stock casing and moulding. 

This is paper by the formidable and famous Thibaut. “The nation’s oldest continuously operating wallpaper firm”

Pretty gorgeous, huh? 


JC loves animals, and that is reflected all over her home (we have this in common, you can see my millions of dogs portraits and bird chandelier in the feature Cottages and Bungalows did on my own home a while back)- and this one really resonated with her with it’s deer and bunnies and modern twist on toile. It’s from Mitchell Black, the masters of peel and stick paper- perfect for lockdown times. 

An additional color was needed to wake up a back and white space with black and white paper, so you will see some adds of a fabulous earthbound coral color. In a Pagoda Pendant by Chelsea House designer Claire Bell, and a lovely double gourd lamp by Wildwood, and some Farrow and Ball paint color on that cute dresser piece. I tucked in an antique hand knotted rug from Esty because hand knotted wool rugs do ok in bathrooms, and they look fabulous. Check out the concept in this quick and dirty photoshop. 

 We both also loved this incredible offering from Cole & Son “handprinted papers since 1875″. Look at how there’s a fisherman in there, and someone holding a bird! And that lovely, lovely color. SO many options! 

JC shared with us some info on having your home be rented as a filming location, something she does from time to time. A big factor for JC is that DIY install aspect. Generally there is an installer advising the best adhesive for the conditions, calling out the amount of paper and making the perfect cuts and pattern match. In this case, there’s JC, the seller of the products and that’s it! 


It’s so important to leverage the knowledge of the manufacturers to ensure what you are contemplating is right for where it’s going. Since this was a 1 hour complementary consult, this work falls to JC- but in a design service with the designer supplying the paper, it would fall to the designer. IN eDesign, measuring is done by the clients- so that part is critical as well.
